Are Osama Bin-Laden's cronies posting comments on Newsvine and many other American discussion boards? You bet and they are not alone. Iran, Venezuela, North Korea, Communist China, Hezbollah, Russia, Terrorists from many countries, and Lobbyists surely post comments on many American discussion boards. Most have the computer savvy, speak excellent English, and have attended universities in America. Many of these people and countries hack into our computer systems daily with great efficiency. The Pentagon is a popular site for hacking. North Korea was recently blamed for causing servers to freeze in the U.S. It would be easy for them to post on American discussion boards, and how would we know who it was? Look on any board about Health Care Reform and you will see what I mean. Some probably even use patriotic names like "USAforever", "USEagle", and "Will Rogers". I don't mean to stigmatize those with patriotic names. I have never yet seen a patriotic name that I didn't like.
Why would they post on American discussion boards? Do you think the comments would be civil and productive discussions? Do they do it for the same reasons many of us do - to debate, learn others views, kick around, or chat? Or, do they do it to confuse, inflame opinions, spur hatred, promote racism, divide Americans, or distract people from the subject being discussed? They want to clutter up the board, distract you, and make it sterile and unproductive. They want to prevent us from the challenging task of communicating, foster hate and racism, cause a schism in the U.S. and ultimately destroy us or defeat and colonize us. Some might post links you can go to. Would these links be objective or subjective sites? Would you get a computer virus by going to these sites?
What would their comments be like? Would they be long with lots of good debate points, or would they be short and hateful? Some are short and name calling and some are long (the longer the better), cut and paste rantings with unfamiliar looking links. Read some of the comments and you can spot them. "Obumer is a socialist who wants to rule the world" or "You are a stupid Republican and you will rot in hell" or "BO bama only knows to spend and spend - him and Pelosi will ruin this country and laugh about it later - he should resign" or "Christians are Stupid, Atheist know best". Misspelled words are not uncommon. Many times the comments have nothing to do with the subject being talked about and are histrionical. Attacks on our America are meant to dishearten and discourage us. They want to divide us and ultimately destroy us.
The insurance companies have hired thousands of lobbyists to try and influence Health Care Reform. They want to lead Americans to do what they want no matter the negatives for our society. You can be sure some of them are on discussion boards. We all have a good idea what they would say: Can't afford it, death panels, pay for illegal immigrants, wait in lines, ration treatment, and socialism. They would generally do what they were hired to do, spread fear and hate to impact reform.
How should we respond to this disinformation? First, we should ignore any remarks that do not address the subject of the discussion board. Any comments that are no more than name calling should be ignored. Do not respond to them because it is in vain. Sparring with them in short hate talk comments back and forth (you liberal low life idiot - you conservatives are killing America-up yours) not only serves to clutter (these can go on for 20 to 30 comments) but also causes Americans to think less of our society as a whole. They want you to respond so you will waste your time and not get to see other's relevant information or get your own ideas out. They attack any comments.
Ignore ones that seem to want to do harm. It can be done on discussion boards just as it can be done by terrorist acts. This is communication terrorism.
I write this because since I have been on Newsvine, which I love, I have been startled by some of the posts. I got depressed thinking of all the large numbers of extreme, agitated, and frenetic comments I was seeing here. I asked myself what has become of America, and wondered when the civil war was going to break out. Yes, I felt divided and became bemused. Then I woke up one day and thought. These can't all be post from Americans, and I thought of Osama Bin-Laden.
However, some of the radical and hysterical comments are surely from Americans. They are sometimes justified in their goals, but overzealous. I do not believe we are heading toward socialism or ruin. We live in freedom and we vote for our representatives. We should always fight hard to protect our freedoms by keeping informed, communicating with others, and voting. Many in this country do not even know who the speaker of the house is or what the first amendment is. Let me repeat - be informed, communicate, and vote. We have more freedoms than any other country in the world but cannot expect to be free of all government. Government needs to be monitored, but it is sometimes beneficial and needed. These things are lots of work but necessary.
Don't be discouraged by others posting hate and name calling here, just ignore them. Use the discussion boards for the reasons they are here, to express your opinion and see others opinions. Thanks to Newsvine for giving us this forum.
